Semiautomated robotic, CT-guided needle placement for postmortem CSF sampling – a Novel application of the Virtobot

The sampling of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for chemical analysis is usually performed by a freehand lumbar puncture in routine clinical procedure, while the suboccipital region used postmortem examinations. We introduce new application semiautomated robotic, computed tomography (CT)-guided needle placement and CSF sampling. Postmortem (PMCT) imaging was performed, data were sent to custom-made Virtopsy Control Center Planning Navigation Station. Needle trajectories planned both approaches. Coaxial introducer needles fully inserted automatically robotic system. PMCT repeated verify correct needles. Subsequently, samples taken using syringe. By this application, spinal canal cerebellomedullary cistern could be accurately within millimeter. Thus, failure iatrogenic injury medulla oblongata may prevented, risk infection significantly reduced. An early sample allows assessment regard subsequent autopsy. Our minimally invasive, fast, efficient safe prior autopsy, enabling an metabolic imbalance, infection, etc.
